chicken fried rice musubi bento
Here I thought with the end of Keira's summer camp I'd be over with bento lunches. Not so! Now I'm making the bento lunches for myself. Actually, I've been making my own bento lunches throughout the summer along with Keira's as seen here and here.
Today's bento lunch is a fake musubi bento! lol. Fake because I used fried rice and I didn't wrap it up in nori (even though I have some on hand).
It was parent/teacher meeting last night and Mr C made a quick chicken fried rice for supper. I wanted to take some to work with me today. I wanted to use the musubi/onigiri mold I bought at Pearl River in New York. I think it'll be the perfect serving size. Either that or it's going to be my mid-day snack! I used both the large and small molds and placed my pimped musubi in the top tray of Keira's Hello Kitty bento and in the bottom tray, added a mixed salad, alfafa sprouts, cherry tomatoes just picked from our garden, some olives and drizzled a pesto vinaigrette over it all. Accompanying all this are some salted Californian pistachios. Oh! I just had to add the Chimp chopsticks cuz I thought he was too cute! Another cute purchase from Pearl River..
Bon Appétit!

just in time for b2s!
Bag: Anthropologie; Agenda: Pierre Belvédère "Birdie"
Isn't this a gorgeous agenda? Made in Italy..
I just had to buy one. What do you think? They are all made and embossed in Italy of the highest quality materials and are durable enough to last more than a year's worth of lugging around.
I am really sad I won't be doing product design for now. I had an amazing time designing for PB and the product manager there. You know, it's amazing to work with people who are really into their work and so incredibly detail oriented. It can also drive a designer mad because of all the back and forth, the nitpicking but I must admit, the end result.. is fantastic. I was very lucky to work with this product manager and his assistant. Not only because he and his assistant were fantastic people but also because he was so damned infectiously enthusiastic! I really miss both of them. I also miss working with our contacts in Italy because, they were that good too. Okay, before I start crying miserably here... Thank you Benoit & Patrizia! And also to Daniela & Katia.. I so miss you all! (psst! callez-moi). lol.
Here are some more notebooks that are available in stores now!

Available at:
Archambault
Indigo
Chapters
Renaud Bray
Also check out Pierre Belvédère's new, more comprehensive and easy to navigate website! You can also view other products I helped design, namely agendas, notebooks & journals and address books.

summer saturday
Goofing around..
The lovely Miss B!
Last rays of summer.. This weekend's weather has proven to be a stunner. Summer sunshine, warm breeze.
Keira spent her Saturday with her best friend, Miss B! The usual frenetic activities ensued: dress up, dress down, arguments, tears, make-ups, hugs, laughter, giggling, play at the park, running around & more. I loved being there with them. It just felt great to hear the laughter & be outside.
We continued the playdate by taking the girls out to watch Despicable Me! If you haven't seen it yet, please go. It is hilarious! Despite a rough start (the kids found the extreme sound unbearable at first), I heard the girls laughing as much as we did. Keira never put on her 3D glasses though. Anyone else with kids who hate wearing those 3D glasses??
We took the kids to supper and us moms had a nice big glass of refreshing beer. Lol! Perfect Saturday.

know yourself, know your space
Have you ever wondered where bloggers blog from? Wondered what their office or work space looks like? Wonder what certain entrepreneurs home/work offices look on the inside? I often do.
Occasionally, design studios and designers will give us a wonderful glimpse of their amazing spaces via their online sites like DwellStudio:
or even Etsy:
It's why I love reading SeenandSaid, BabySpace, Leah's The Way We Are, Ohdeedoh, Will's Brights.Bazaar and BloesemKids (bkids has incredible posts on entrepreneurs and their spaces!) as well as PirouetteBlog (this blog also features great one on one's with designers and their kids), and many many more. They all introduce, share and showcase office spaces of fantastic bloggers, designers and regular Joe's like us.
Why this curiosity? Perhaps it's the voyeur in me. I like to see what inspires other people, other designers, companies. How their surroundings affect them. I used to say when looking for a job that it wasn't the space that I sought but rather the people and most importantly, the work itself. Today, after having worked in many different companies throughout the years, I know for a fact that I am adversely affected by my environment. I have a deep interest in how companies set up windowless offices, how they've managed the lighting to counterbalance being in a, let's face it, box (or as I call my office space now, the Morgue). I check out desk placement and layouts, decor and location.
I also love to see the environments of bloggers & designers. How do they get inspired and how do their environments inspire them?
This being summer, I walk into work from morning sunshine and am ready to face the day's challenges yet as I sit in a dark environment with low lights, I can feel my energy and creativity start to wane as the day goes by and my spirits plummet. It's a crazy experience as I create some of my best designs late at night with the very same conditions (i.e. dark room, low light)! Perhaps it's because I'm at home, I am surrounded by everything I love. Working late into the night, I can hear my daughter's slow and steady sleep induced breathing (my office/her playroom is 2 steps down from the bedrooms), my desk is setup the way I like with frames, photos, trinkets of everything I love. But the best, oh yes, the best experience is being able to work from home. I merged my office with Keira's playroom in the second largest room of our home. Instead of 1 large window, we have 2 on both ends of the room looking out either to the front of the house or the backyard. It's an incredibly light-filled space and I love it. I get a huge sense of peace when I sit there and my spirits and creativity soar when the room is lit up in sunshine.
As any parent knows, it's hard to really work with your kids afoot. Knowing that I'll probably get most of my work done at nights, it's easy to be interactive with Keira during the day. She loves to check out what I'm doing, loves to be able to 'draw' on the computer and we'll check out what's she interested in at that moment (i.e. a video on youtube, figuring out what a certain character's name is in a show etc). Luckily, her Barbie dolls call to her and her interest in the digital peters out quickly or she'll make me get off my duff and head outside with her.
I am planning on changing the colours in this room but in the meantime, this is where my heart is, where my creativity gets recharged and my spirits soar.
Where do you love to be and how does it inspire you daily?

empire state of mind :: pt deux
Well folks, finally went through the rest of my New York images.. I can't believe we were just there only last week. Although my body is in Montreal, my head is still partly at the beach and partly in the Big Apple. Keeping it short this time.. the photos tell the tale. Can I tell you a secret? One of the biggest reasons why I love coming back to New York time and time again is because it was my first & last mother/daughter trip. My mother knew I was miserable and missed my cousin so much that during spring break when I was 15, surprised me with an airfare to NYC. I cherish that trip and remember every single sensation I had way back when. I watched Pretty in Pink somewhere in New Jersey, late at night with my cousin where the entire audience spoke back to the film and threw popcorn at Steff (my Spader!), and then watched A Room with a View in Central Park. Argued with a very imposing server at a deli counter that my bagel was not a bagel (I told him it was a bun with a hole in it!), listened to Bananarama, the Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen in my cousin's then basement apartment in Queens and lost myself to the sights and sounds of the city. I hope one day to make a similar trip with my little girl.. and imprint a similar yet different memory for her.
So this time around, we visited.. The Central Park Zoo (I loved it! but where were the animals? Déjà-vu of San Diego zoo) and shopped at J.Crew & Anthropologie where I browsed to my heart's content (and also scored some great items on sale). The merchandising is in-cred-ible. We also brought Keira to FAO Schwartz because.. we love living dangerously! We did bring her to the giant keyboard (à la Big) however, the 'big' boys scared her off. So no photo.
This leg of the trip, we were true tourists spending time on 5th Avenue and Rockefeller Plaza & Center. I have never, in over 4 visits, missed a stop to my favourite department store: Henri Bendel. It is unique, it is gorgeous, it is divine. The last time we were here, we enjoyed the Columbus Day Parade (which celebrates the Italian/American heritage and occurs every October).
So my friends, can I get you something to drink? Tea, coffee.. a mocha latte? Sit down and savour the photos.. I am so very happy to be able to share our trip & memories with you all!
